Microwave Safety 101

Microwaves are a great accessory to have in a kitchen. Being able to heat something quickly when you’re in a rush or even expedite the thawing of something in the midst of making a delicious meal is invaluable. However, they can also cause problems very quickly if you’re not careful.

If you accidentally put a metal object in the microwave, you pretty much get your own personal fireworks show! They may be fun outdoors in a controlled environment but trust me it isn’t a good time watching your appliance looking like it’s about to explode and take the house with it! Never put a metal pot, bowl, pan, etc. in the microwave and even double-check that mugs and drink-ware doesn’t have any metal on it.

Only use microwave safe containers and dishes in the microwave to avoid melting or breaking. Melting plastic can cause spills but hard containers that aren’t capable of withstanding rapid temperature changes could not only rupture in the microwave but even worse could rupture when cold air hits it as you open the door.

When you open containers, make sure you open them away from your face so no hot contents pop up into your face including any hot steam. This as well as using a hot pad to handle the container should help you avoid burns.

To Compact Or Not To Compact?

Trash compactors are typically considered an upscale appliance but they are just as much for the environment as they are for the users. They allow consumers to use up less space in trash cans which may be necessary if you are paying per bag or can of trash for removal services. This also makes for less land-fill space being used up by your trash since it is already in a compacted form. They can compress trash to 20% of the space it would normally take up. This means 80% less landfill space will be consumed by your trash. If you want to get really technical, less gas is being used by the trash trucks if everyone uses compactors since it will require less trips to the dump if less space is taken up in the trucks!

Trash compactors come in both under-counter and stand-alone models. Stand-alone models don’t require fabrication of your kitchen and come in many different styles. Some of them just look like a regular trash can… with a cord.

Please remember to also recycle cans, bottles and cardboard wherever you can – this helps our landfills even more!

Need to Vent?

If you live in tight quarters such as an apartment you may think there are no options for dryers and you have to run to the Laundromat but the truth is there are non-vented dryers available. A non-vented dryer has a heat exchanger that cools the air that was heated in the dryer that allows the air to condense and drain off either into a reservoir that has to be emptied or you can run it into a drain tube that empties out into a septic line or is routed outside the building. While they are significantly more convenient than having to go to a Laundromat or basement laundry center, they are arguably not as effective as a vented dryer. Safety is generally not any more of a concern so long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Ventless dryers are all electric powered. It is suggested that you have the condenser cleaned on a regular basis as even with proper lint trap cleaning, lint can build up on the condenser.

Are you Smarter Than Your Appliance?

Many major manufacturers conducted studies asking consumers about their perception of smart appliances throughout Germany, China, and North America. They polled for home building materials, foods, high tech electronics, and smart appliances. They discovered that consumers don’t feel there has been a strong improvement in smart appliance quality despite the ever increasing number of features available. Consumers actually indicated that they don’t feel there has been much of an improvement in appliance quality over the last five years.

Let’s hope manufacturers take this to heart and start making appliances that are noticeably better quality! What are your thoughts on smart appliances and their quality over the last five years?
